Abstract
Objectives
The Tianhui Medical Bamboo Slips (Laoguanshan Medical Bamboo Slips) excavated in 2012 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, contain basic medical theories that differ from those established through the history of traditional medicine after the formation of Huangdi Neijing. This paper aims to reveal aspects of early traditional medical theories that were formed before the compilation of Huangdi Neijing by analyzing how the organ-related symptoms in the Tianhui Medical Bamboo Slips differ from those in later medical texts.
Methods
I searched the original text of the Tianhui Medical Bamboo Slips for clauses containing the names of the six organs (liver, heart, spleen, stomach, lungs, kidneys) and collected symptoms related to these organs, then interpreted the symptom descriptions and compared them with today's organ-related symptoms to clarify the differences.
Result and conclusions
The symptoms related to the spleen, stomach and lungs in the Tianhui Medical Bamboo Slips are similar to those of today, while the symptoms related to the liver, heart, and kidneys show significant differences. Particularly, the symptoms of the spleen and stomach in the Tianhui Medical Bamboo Slips are well distinguished in a way similar to today's understanding, indicating that the authors of the Tianhui Medical Bamboo Slips had made considerable progress in the formation of ancient theories regarding the spleen and stomach.
